In the event of an emergency, it's recommended you have the following items ready in case you need to evacuate your residence or make due without electricity or water service for an extended period of time.
Water: one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation.
Food: at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
Flashlight and extra batteries
First aid kit
Whistle to signal for help
Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape
Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
Manual can opener if kit contains canned food
Local maps
Charger for mobile phones
Cash, travelers checks and change in case ATMs are unavailable or something prevents the use of credit/debit cards
Additional items to consider:
Prescription medicine and glasses
Infants: formula, diapers, bottles
Pets: food, additional water, leash, medications
Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container
Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
Complete change of clothing including sturdy shoes, long sleeved shirt and long pants
Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper
Fire extinguisher
Matches in a waterproof container
Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
Paper and pencil
Books, games, puzzles and other activities for children
Emergency Items for your Car
Hazard triangles (or flares)
Jumper cables (at least 6-gauge)
Flashlight with spare batteries
Tow rope

Small bag of sand or kitty litter
