Pool maintenance
  • A Diatomaceous Earth filter should be taken apart and cleaned twice a year.
Annually
Check your chimney before use; creosote can build up inside the walls and cause a fire
  • Remember, open the flue before lighting.
  • Extinguish all flames and embers completely when the fire is finished.
Check your electric panel for any overloaded circuits; this can be as simple as feeling the breakers to see if they're warm to the touch.
Check window and door frames for cracks, leaks or shifting and replace caulk and weather sealing as necessary.
Clean all lawn and garden tools.
Clean gutters and downspouts.
Dispose of old batteries, chemicals, and prescriptions by contacting your city's hazardous waste department.
Have your heating and air conditioning equipment serviced.
Inspect and flush water heater. Test the pressure release valve.
Paint and reseal exterior as needed.
Spring
Apply crabgrass preventer by April 1. Sunny slopes and lawns near sidewalks warm up quicker than the rest of the lawn and may need early treatment.
Crabgrass thrives in hot weather and continues to germinate until late summer. Treat your lawn again with crabgrass preventer six to eight weeks after the spring treatment, or according to the manufacturer's directions.
Autumn
Autumn weed pre-emergent applications for those in North Texas should be done Sept. 10-20. Two different products should be applied for complete winter annual weed control: products with isoxaben as their active ingredient for broadleafed weeds and for winter grasses use Betasan, Dimension, Team, Pre-M or other recommended products.
Holidays / Christmas
Keep trees moist in lots of water.
When trees dry out, discard them. Dry trees are fire hazards.
Artificial trees must be fire resistant!
All holiday lights should bear the UL (Underwriters Labroratories) seal.
Do not overload outlets.
No wires under carpets.
Do not leave unattended candles burning.
